KANSAS CITY, Mo. Red Auerbach Jersey . -- Nelson Cruz has only two hits in 15 at-bats against the Kansas City Royals this season. Both are home runs. Cruz hit a two-run homer and the first-place Baltimore Orioles beat the Royals 2-1 on Thursday night to snap a four-game losing streak. Cruz homered in the fourth after Chris Davis drew a walk to lead off the inning. It was Cruzs 12th home run, which is second in the American League to the 15 of Chicago White Sox rookie Jose Abreu. Cruzs 35 RBIs are tied for second in the AL. "Hes one of the best power hitters in the American League over the past five or six years," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "Hes hit in a good hitters park in Texas, but hes got power to all fields." Wei-Yin Chen (5-2) limited the Royals to one run and seven hits over 5 1-3 innings with one walk and one strikeout. Chen, who is 5-1 in his past seven starts, was removed in the sixth after Salvador Perez walked and Alex Gordon singled with one out. Darren ODay replaced Chen and struck out Danny Valencia and retried Johnny Giavotella on a fly to right. Royals rookie right-hander Yordano Ventura (2-3) struck out nine and walked one in 6 1-3 innings, allowing two runs and seven hits. After Cruzs home run, Ventura retired the next 10 batters, striking out seven, including six straight at one stretch. "He made a mistake to Nelson Cruz and it wasnt even a mistake," Yost said. "I think he threw a good fastball to Nelson. It was up and over the middle of the plate and he ambushed it." Cruz hit the first pitch out to right-centre from Ventura, who has a fastball that routinely hits triple digits on radar guns. "We know hes got a great fastball," Cruz said. "He can get you quick. Hes got great stuff. It was one of those at-bats that I got what I was looking for. We were trying to be aggressive and he was throwing a lot of first-pitch fastballs. I was looking for a fastball." With a northwest wind blowing 15 mph and gusting up to 28, it was less than ideal conditions to hit a home run. "You could have made some money off me if youd have bet me that somebody could have gotten a ball out of here tonight," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. Valencias sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the fourth scored Eric Hosmer for the only run off Chen. "Ventura pitched great," Giavotella said. "We just couldnt back him up with any runs." Left-hander Zach Britton, who had not allowed a run in 7 1-3 innings in his past eight appearances, worked a perfect ninth for his first major league save. Showalter elected to go to Britton after closer Tommy Hunter blew his past two save chances. "Guys graduate," Showalter said. "It was a good start and its good to know that if we need him for a given night hell be ready. Well see how it goes from here." The Royals did not have a baserunner off four Baltimore relievers, who retired 11 straight. "Our pitchers did a really good job and we really needed this win," Cruz said. "Anytime you can win a game by one run its huge. We feel like we can get something going." The Orioles, who went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position, threatened in the seventh and eighth innings, but came away empty. Gordon, a three-time Gold Glove Award winner, threw out J.J. Hardy at the plate to end the seventh for his fourth outfield assist this season and his 58th since moving to the outfield in 2011. Hardy attempted to score from second on Nick Markakis single. Manny Machado and Adam Jones led off the Orioles eighth with singles off Louis Coleman, the third Kansas City pitcher. Kelvin Herrera replaced Coleman and struck out Davis and Cruz and retired Steve Clevenger on a grounder to strand the runners. NOTES: The Orioles recalled RHP Evan Meek from Triple-A Norfolk and optioned RHP Kevin Gausman, who lost a Wednesday start to Detroit, to the same club. ... Markakis snapped an 0-for-14 skid with three singles. ... Royals RHP Wade Davis has a stiff neck and was not available. Marcus Morris Jersey . Those cheers seemed more special this time because the captains run on Broadway could soon be over. The adoration surely sounded much nicer to Callahan than all the recent trade talk. Jayson Tatum Jersey . This is an exercise I have undertaken a few times, starting in 2009, and hope that Ive refined my approach a little bit in that time to help paint a better picture. http://www.shopceltics.com/Cheap-Jaylen-...cs-Jersey/ . Those cheers seemed more special this time because the captains run on Broadway could soon be over. The adoration surely sounded much nicer to Callahan than all the recent trade talk.Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - David Pastrnak scored the first two goals of his career to lead the Boston Bruins in a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. Chris Kelly had the other goal and Tuukka Rask stopped 24 shots for the Bruins, who have won their past three. Claude Giroux scored the only goal of the game for the Flyers, who had won their previous two. Steve Mason started the game in net for Philadelphia, but left seven minutes into the first period with a right leg injury. He stopped all five shots he faced while Ray Emery allowed three goals on 13 shots in relief. Skating on the power play in the first period, the Bruins took a 1-0 lead on Pastrnaks first career goal. With Jakub Voracek in the box, Zdeno Chara sent a backhand pass from behind the net to the left circle where Torey Krug got off a one-timer. Emery made the stop, but the rebound sat out front and Pastrnak backhanded it in at 11:23. The middle stanza passed without a goal, but the Bruins padded their advantage at 4:57 of the third as Pastrnak took a feed in the neutral zone and left a drop pass for David Krejci aalong the right wing. Danny Ainge Jersey. Charging the net, Pastrnak got the puck back from Krejci for an easy wrister and a 2-0 lead. Philly was skating on a power play when Boston took a 3-0 lead after Loui Eriksson banked the puck off the boards in his own end to create a 2-on-1. Skating down the left wing, Eriksson sent the puck to the other side where Kelly beat Emery high to the short-side for his fifth of the season at 9:51. The Flyers were again on the power play when they finally broke through as Girouxs wrister from the left circle hit off the stick of a Bruin and went past Rask with Wayne Simmonds providing a screen in front and 5:47 showing. Philadelphia pulled Emery with two minutes to play for an extra skater, but was unable to cut into the deficit. Game Notes The Flyers said during the game that Mason will be further evaluated on Sunday ... Philadelphia hosts Tampa Bay on Monday ... Boston hosts Tampa Bay on Tuesday ... The Bruins have won five straight against the Flyers ... Pastrnak was the 25th overall pick of the 2014 draft and was appearing in his seventh game. LIVERPOOL, N. Matt Martin Jersey .S. - Nova Scotias Mary Fay guaranteed at least one more match and a shot at the Canadian junior curling championships final on home ice. Fay, who skips from nearby Chester, N.S., fell behind 3-0 on Thursday before rallying past Saskatchewans Kristen Streifel 7-6. The win clinches a tiebreaker berth for Fay, third Jenn Smith, second Karlee Burgess and lead Janique LeBlanc, wholl play Ontarios Molly Greenwood on Friday for a spot in Saturdays semifinal. "Were not satisfied," said Fay (7-2). "Were going to keep fighting, for sure, because we want to do the best we possibly can. And we know we can be right there." Albertas Kelsey Rocque (9-1) clinched a bye to Saturdays final by beating Manitobas Meaghan Brezden 6-4, while B.C.s Kalia Van Osch (8-2) will play either Fay or Greenwood in the semi. "Being the first time for us to come to nationals, and doing so well, its definitely a really good feeling," said Fay. "But we knew we could compete with these teams. I just know I have the best teammates, and we work so hard. I know that every time we go onto the ice, we can make the shots to compete with these teams. "I dont know how much I expected, but I expected to do well and were really pleased with how its going so far." Meanwhile, the Yukons Sarah Koltun stole one in the 11th end for a 9-8 win over Northern Ontarios Krysta Burns. In mens seeding-round games, the Yukons Joe Wallingham was a 6-5 winner over Newfoundland and Labradors Stephen Trickett, while Quebecs Adam Freilich turned back the Northwest Territories Matthew Miller 10-3. Denis Potvin Jersey .com) - New England Patriots starting center Bryan Stork will not play in Sundays AFC Championship against Indianapolis due to a knee injury the rookie sustained last week. New York Islanders Jerseys . -- The Denver Broncos retired John Elways No. http://www.islanderssale.com/authentic-j...rs-jersey/ . They showered him with "MVP! MVP!" chants. In many ways, it seemed like hed never been gone. Each round of the playoffs, I forecast the round simply by using shots on goal and goaltender save percentage to come up with a baseline for the series. Its not intended to be some magical formula and doesnt apply any context, like, for example, taking injuries into account. This method was 5-3 in the first round and is currently 2-1 in the second round, with the Kings favoured entering their series against Anaheim (Game Seven goes tonight in Anaheim). More on context in a moment. The expected goals for each team in the series are determined by taking each teams shots for and against over the course of the season, as well as through the first round of the playoffs, and splitting the difference. So, for example, the New York Rangers, over the regular season and playoffs have averaged 32.9 shots on goal per game and the Montreal Canadiens have allowed 31.0 shots on goal per game; the average of those two numbers, 31.95 shots, is the number that is then multiplied by (1 - the opposing goaltenders save percentage) to determine an expected goals per game for the Bruins. Finally, the number is multiplied by seven to indicate an expected goal total for a seven-game series. Theres no guarantee that scoring more goals in a series will result in winning four games first, but the odds certainly favour the team that scores more. So, lets see how the numbers shake out for the Conference Finals: Team SF SA Goaltender SV% Expected GF/Series Montreal 28.7 31.0 Carey Price .927 15.92 N.Y. Rangers 32.9 29.6 Henrik Lundqvist .922 16.33 Verdict: This series projects to be very closely contested. Through the first two rounds this year, only the two Los Angeles series projected to have a closer differential than the forecasted 0.41 goals between the Rangers and Canadiens, and both of those series were seven-gamers. Montreal has been a subpar puck possession team this year, but it turns out that they have a great goaltender and a dangerous power play, one that was 32% (8-for-25) against Boston. Knock off a few power play goals or give Price a save percentage below the .936 that he posted against the Bruins and it would be easy enough to see Boston in this spot. As for the Rangers, they were a strong puck possession club during the season that eliminated Pittsburgh despite losing the possession game to the Penguins in Round Two. The Rangers also have the benefit of good goaltending, as they rallied from a three-games-to-one series deficit, as Henrik Lundqvist stopped 102 of 105 shots (.971 SV%) in the last three Rangers wins. It would be too simple to suggest that goaltending determines this series, since both Price and Lunqvist are among the best, so there are other factors to consider. Both teams top-scoring forwards havent produced in the postseason. No one on the Rangers has more than Brad Richards nine points in 14 games and Rick Nash has yet to score a goal. Montreals big goal-scorers, Thomas Vanek and Max Pacioretty, combined to score four goals in Game Six and Seven against Boston, after combining for four in the first nine games of the playoffs. The lack of a go-to-scorer for both teams has emphasized the team approach. For Montreal, Lars Eller, Brendan Gallagher, Daniel Briere, Dale Weise and Rene Bourque are among those that have risen to the occasion at times in the playoffs, while the Rangers supporting cast of Benoit Pouliot, Derick Brassard and Carl Hagelin has been able to score just enough for the Blueshirts to reachh the Conference Final. Clark Gillies Jersey. If there is a single non-goaltender with the power to shift the series, it could be Montreals P.K. Subban, the top-scoring defenceman in the playoffs who has been in the middle of just about everything that happens with the Canadiens. If Subban is great, that alone could be enough to overcome the slight statistical disadvantage in this forecast. Team SF SA Goaltender SV% Expected GF/Series Chicago 32.4 27.7 Corey Crawford .919 17.64 Los Angeles 31.5 26.9 Jonathan Quick .915 16.78 Team SF SA Goaltender SV% Expected GF/Series Chicago 32.4 27.7 Corey Crawford .919 10.71 Anaheim 30.7 28.8 John Gibson .950 16.56 Verdict: Since there isnt much of a window between the second round ending, Friday night, and the Conference Final round beginning, Saturday at 1:00 pm ET, were going to look at both options in the Western Conference. Chicago hasnt even played their best hockey in the postseason, yet its still been good enough to dispatch St. Louis and Minnesota. Corey Crawford deserves some credit, because his .931 save percentage in this years playoffs is right on track with what he did last year (.932) on the way to the Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup. Chicago was a dominant possession team during the regular season, second only to Los Angeles in Fenwick Close, but havent held that same edge in the playoffs. Better opposition, and all that. The same could be said for the Kings, who earned 56.7% of the unblocked 5-on-5 shot attempts during the regular season, but havent held that same territorial dominance in the playoffs. The interesting thing is that, while hes had some strong games in the playoffs -- both this year and historically -- Jonathan Quick hasnt been much better than average this year. Its reasonable enough to forecast the Blackhawks to survive that possible matchup, and not just because we know the Blackhawks will for sure be in the Conference Final. When it comes to breaking down the Chicago-Anaheim series, the model gets busted by Ducks rookie goalie John Gibson. Its one thing to have a goalie that has played a grand total of six games in the NHL as the starter, but his .950 save percentage in those games, stopping 171 of 180 shots, is a completely unsustainable level of play. Thing is, unsustainable levels of play can get a team through a playoff series. Gibson was a wildcard injection into the second round, against Los Angeles, after Frederik Andersen was injured, and gives the Ducks a chance in Game Seven. However, its not remotely reasonable forecast to suggest that the Ducks would be 5.85 goals ahead of the Blackhawks in a head-to-head seven-game series. The Ducks arent as strong a possession team as Los Angeles, or Chicago, and have relied on extraordinary shooting percentage, in addition to their hot goalie. The Blackhawks have been a team of high-percentage finishers too, so the Ducks best chance, should they survive the Battle of Los Angeles, may be for Gibson to keep on keeping on. SEATTLE -- Everything that Clint Dempsey hoped would happen last year after his splashy signing with the Seattle Sounders is happening now. Eduardo Jersey . Dempsey scored twice in a five-minute span early in the second half and set up Lamar Neagles first-half goal to help the Seattle Sounders beat the Colorado Rapids 4-1 on Saturday. Dempsey leads MLS with eight goals. He has at least a goal or an assist in each of Seattles last six games. It is the second time in his career that Dempsey has had a six-game scoring streak in MLS, having done it previously in 2005 while with the New England Revolution. "The year I scored 23 with Fulham, I was on a pretty good run there, but it feels good," Dempsey said. "Were in a good rhythm as a team, we have a good locker room, and it think that shows on the field in our play." After Dempsey joined the Sounders last August, expectations for him and the team soared. But in nine games, he scored only one goal, and Seattles late-season swoon ended with another early playoff exit. Now, the Sounders have won three straight to improve to 5-2-1, thanks in large part to Dempsey. "When I first came, I felt like there werent too many games where I could look back and say, You know what? I had a lot of chances, I should have scored," Dempsey said. "I feel like in games now, Im getting good looks and looks that are allowing me to put the ball into the back of the net. I have to compliment my teammates on that. I feel like were playing better right now than we were toward the end of last season." Added Sounders coach Sigi Schmid, "I dont know what the records are for so many goals in so many games, but he might be setting some of those." Obafemi Martins added a 75th-minute goal for Seattle. Dillon Serna scored in the 62nd minute for the Rapids (3-2-2). Dempsey and Martins (who tallied his third) have accounted for 11 of the Sounders 17 goals. "Whether it six against six or eight against eight in practice, we try to put them on the same team where they look for each other and find each other," Schmid said, "and you see it showing now in games." Neagles blast 2 yards in front of a wide-open net gave the Sounders a 1-0 lead 15 seconds into the only minute of first-half stoppage time, and was his third goal of the year. Dempsey made it 2-0 at the outset of the 47th minute, running onto a loose ball at the top of 6-yard box that Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin had slapped away, but couldnt latch onto. Early in the 52nd minute, Chad Marshall headed Gonzalo Pinedas corner kick toward Dempsey, and Dempsey headed it in just over Irwins reach. Neagle assisted on the goal by Martins, which was his third goal of the season. Colorado came in with back-to-back shutouts and had allowed just five goals all season until yielding the four on Saturday. The Sounders outshot the Rapids, 20-10. "The two guys up top (Dempsey and Martins) really made a difference," Rapids coach Pablo Mastoeni said. "Dempsey caused us a bit of grief. And again, if youre not good with the ball, youre going to end up defending. Against a team like this, you definitely dont want to be defending deep in your half as we found ourselves for the majority of the game. "With the type of players they have, it just puts a lot of pressure on our defence and forced a lot of errors that led to the dismantling of the team," Mastoeni added. Kyle Scott Jersey . The $145.7-million Tim Hortons Field was slated to open this month, a year before it was to host all 32 mens and womens soccer competitions. The delay has forced the Hamilton Tiger-Cats football team to use a smaller facility for the first two home games of the season. John Obi Mikel Jersey . The Canadiens captain, who underwent surgery on his injured biceps in the off-season, had been skating with the team in a non-contact capacity since last week. http://www.chelseasoccerjerseysonline.co...ea-jersey/ .com) - The Vancouver Canucks will try to win two straight games for the first time since mid-January on Monday night as they play host to the struggling New York Islanders.CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Panthers coach Ron Rivera said hes awaiting final clearance from team physicians before officially naming Cam Newton the starter for Sundays game against the Cleveland Browns. That clearance is expected to come Saturday.Right now, everything is pointing in the right direction, Rivera said Friday. The reason I havent said anything (definitive) is because of that one big thing — waiting for doctors to tell me they feel good about it.Newton practiced Friday for the third straight day and Rivera said he feels very confident and comfortable that the fourth-year quarterback will start Sunday, 12 days after a two-vehicle wreck left him with two lower back fractures.Rivera said he expects Newton to start as long as he keeps going. Good things have happened and weve done a lot of positive things. He said the only way Newton wouldnt play is if he suffers an unforeseen setback this weekend, but added the quarterback has had no ill effects waking up every morning this week. The 25-year-old Newton said Thursday he feels pain-free.The Panthers have increased Newtons workload every day this week to make sure hes ready to play. That includes having him run the football, which will be a part of the game plan.He did a lot of turning and twisting today, Rivera said. We put a lot of pressure on it. We had to do some things on purpose just so we could see. He seems to be right on track.Newton enters the weekend 3-8-1 as the teams starter this season.Derek Anderson ffilled in last week for Newton and threw for 277 yards and one touchdown, leading the Panthers to 19-17 win over Tampa Bay. Filipe Luis Jersey. . Anderson is 2-0 as the teams starter with both wins coming against the Buccaneers (2-11).Newton had one of his best games of the season on Dec. 7, two days before he flipped his 1998 Dodge truck one block from the teams stadium on the way in to watch film. He completed 21 of 33 passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns lead the Panthers to a 41-10 victory at New Orleans. He also ran 12 times for 83 yards and a touchdown, the majority of those rushes on designed running plays. It adds another dimension, Rivera said. He and (Anderson) are similar, but they are different. Cam obviously is a better runner. They both bring a lot to the table. What Cam does is he adds that extra dimension, the ability to run. That was big for us against New Orleans. He had a really good rhythm. Were hoping to recapture some of that. As long as we can continue to do those things and he can do them well, hell stay out there.Rivera said if there is one concern about Newton it is making sure he is protected in the pocket, particularly on blindside hits. Newton has been sacked 36 times in 12 games.NOTES: Rivera said running back DeAngelo Williams will likely miss his third straight start with a broken bone in his hand. Jonathan Stewart is expected to start against Cleveland.___AP NFL website: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL Cheap Barcelona Jerseys Cheap Real Madrid Jerseys Authentic Cheap Bayern Munich Jerseys Cheap Dortmund Jerseys Cheap USA Jerseys Cheap USWNT Jerseys France Soccer Jerseys Soccer Mexico Jerseys Cheap Germany Jerseys Cheap Belgium Soccer Jerseys Brazil Jerseys From China Germany Jerseys From China Authentic Soccer Mexico Jerseys Cheap Portugal Soccer Jerseys Wholesale Spain Jerseys Cheap France Football Jerseys Cheap Germany Jerseys Authentic Cheap Mexico Jerseys Authentic Wholesale Colombia Jerseys Cheap Belgium Football Jerseys Wholesale Argentina Jerseys Cheap USA Soccer Jerseys China cheap uswnt jersey authentic Authentic AC Milan Jerseys Discount Arsenal Jerseys Wholesale A.S. At Calgarys Scotiabank Saddledome over the weekend, about 70 hockey fans and stat heads packed into a conference room to take part in the Alberta Analytics Conference, an opportunity for like-minded people to share ideas about the emerging wave of hockey analytics. John Hannah Jersey . The NHL off-season has often been referred to as The Summer of Analytics - with many high-profile hires in the industry ranging from the Maple Leafs bringing in a whole team of analysts after adding assistant GM Kyle Dubas, to a number of teams adding their own in-house analysts. Rob Vollman, author of Hockey Abstract, was the driving force behind the event. And it fits, as Vollmans Hockey Abstract is all about using objective analysis to evaluate players and teams. With a variety of speakers bringing different experiences, there was something for everyone who might be interested in hockey analytics - from those just wading into the pool and wanting to learn more, to hard-core programmers considering new and different ways of manipulating data. That all said, I got to attend and take a few notes: INTRODUCTION Chris Snow, Calgary Flames Director of Video and Statistical Analysis Whats it about? Snow has been working in the NHL since 2006, when the Minnesota Wild hired him away from covering the Red Sox for the Boston Globe. Snow comes to with stats knowledge and understanding, but also practical experience dealing with NHL teams. Takeaways: - Pushed Sydex Sports to create PUCKS a software system, which connects every play of the game to video. 17 NHL teams use PUCKS, according to Snow. Its more of a video tool than an analytical tool, but it allows NHL video to flow in real time. Snow feels video is the best way to illustrate data to players and coaches, so Flames players have iPads automatically loaded with game video. - Snow feels that the public perception of Brian Burke being anti-analytics -- fostered by Burkes appearances at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference -- are a gruff exterior; Snow feels that he has lots of support from the organization and recognizes that the only way analytics can work for a team is if there is buy-in from decision-makers -- coaches, GM, President. - Snow had high praise for Jacques Lemaire, who understood analytics intuitively, preaching a lot of these concepts before modern stats took hold. - New Flames GM Brad Treliving reads blogs and knows whats out there when it comes to analytics. This isnt uncommon, as Travis Yost reported earlier this year, Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill regularly consults the blogoshere to check on the latest analytics. More: Snow told a story about playing hockey every day during latest NHL lockout with Flames staff and feels like it helped him gain acceptance with new coaching staff....Even if data/video is the niche, its a human business...Some players called him Rain Man or Moneyball...He has been a one-person staff with the Flames, expects to add interns this year...Stays away from formulas, rather tries to provide lots of context...All teams track scoring chances...SportVu or PowerScout (camera tracking) info will require a lot of thought to figure out what information is useful. THE SINGLE-NUMBER DREAM AND THE MARCH TO WAR A.C. Thomas, Founder of War on Ice Whats it about? In the wake of Extra Skater going offline, new sites are popping up to fill the modern stats void. Takeaways: - Thomas spoke of breaking the game into smaller chunks, in order to determine overall value. Whats a face-off win worth? A very little bit, but its something. Whats a controlled zone entry worth? A little bit, but its something. All those little somethings add up. - Discussion about trying to adjust goaltender save percentage, based on the quality of shots they face (using distance). The adjustments arent major, but still trying to examine locations and whether shots are rebounds and whether that can be included. The challenge is taking care to not add extra just because you can. Need data that can be proved. - Is perfect the enemy of the good when it comes to creating a hockey version of baseballs WAR (Wins Above Replacement)? It is possible to go with the best data available now, recognizing that its not 100% perfect. Regression methods need a lot of data (2-5 seasons, in some cases). DOING MORE WITH LESS David Benard, Sportstec.com Whats it about? Its one thing to have tools and people to analyze data, but first the data needs to be accumulated and these Sports Code offerings make it relatively easy to use their customizable programs to track as many facets of the game as a coaching staff wants. This would seem quite useful to someone embarking on a large-scale tracking project (cc: Corey Sznajder). Takeaways: - Trying to improve data collection, by adding qualitative element to quantitative data collection. Think along the lines of a zone exit with control being different than merely dumping the puck out of the zone. - New Vancouver Canucks coach Willie Desjardins was tracking zone exits, though not differentiating between controlled or not, when he was the Dallas Stars associate coach in 2010-2011. - Australian Rules Football teams invest big money in analytics - analyst is commonly the second-highest paid in operations...There is a Calgary Bantam AAA team using coded video. OPEN DISCUSSION Bruce McCurdy, Cult of Hockey Blog, Edmonton Journal Whats it about? With the Summer of Analytics taking away some of the most valued resources in the analytics community, including the Extra Skater web site and the work of Tyler Dellow (@mc79hockey), the discussion was about what comes next? Who is ready to step into the void? Takeaways: - During McCurdys discussion, Rob Vollman insisted that there is still plenty of great content, but it may require going to more than five or six core sites. - The big question: Who is going to have the site that welcomes in a broader audience? - More mainstream coverage is expected, in the same way that like something like OPS now gets regular play on MLB broadcasts. - Summer of Analytics would not have happened without fans/bloggers pushing up the hill. PROPOSAL: PITCH TALKS! Ryan Pike, Managing Editor at Flames Nation Whats it about? An idea about holding TED talks for hockey. TED talks are short talks (18 minutes or less) devoted to spreading ideas. Its been done, with some success, in baseball. Takeaway: - It can be hard to work through the noise online. Ideally, a focused topic for these talks would allow for sharing of experiences and ideas without getting lost in the online chatter. TEAM DYNAMICS AND BEHAVIOURAL ANALYTICS Allan Hamernick, Hamernick & Associates Whats it about? This would be considered the softer side of analytics, looking for matching personality types. The challenge, of course, is that we dont have a record of what personality types are necessary for a team to be successful. There may not be just one mix that can be successful. Takeaways: - While it might be difficult for a team to forego measurables in order to improve their mix of personalities, Hamernick has received feedback from coaches who like knowing this information when it comes time to fill out a coaching staff. - Use brain mapping to see subconscious reactions to questions. CFL coaches talked about potential value for use in the Draft Combine. MICROSTATS AND TRACKING RESULTS Justin Azevedo, Flames Nation Whats it about? Azevedo was tracking 26 micro-stats (passes, icings, offsides, for 68 Flames games and taking in all that data presented him with lots of questions. Takeaways: - Questions evolved from tracking: How are Icings Created? Stretch passes - two of three outcomes are negative. 62 of 355 tracked stretch passes by Flames resulted in a shot attempt. We remember the one that works, not the dozens that result in icing. - How many passes should a team make? For the Flames last season, an average of 1.9 passes led to a successful zone entry. SUPER SHOT SEARCH Greg Sinclair, somekindofninja.com Whats it about? A website that tracks shots and locations and offers many graphing options. Takeaways: - For all the discussion of manually tracking scoring chances, Greg has found that using a home plate design allows him to register scoring chances automatically and the counts are very close to subjective counts. Close enough that time could be better spent tracking other things. - There are questions about the "home plate" definition, but any of those adjustments are relatively small in the grand scheme of all the shots that are being taken into account. BEHIND THE PLAYER USAGE CHARTS Rob Vollman, Author of Hockey Abstract Whats it about? Focus was on Vollmans Player Usage Charts, which combine Offensive Zone Start%, Quality of Competition and Corsi to provide a quick understanding of how a player is utilized, and whether or not hes having some success in that role. Takeaways: - Looking at Player Usage Charts, Vollman compared last seasons Oilers and Flames rosters, showing how someone like Mark Giordano didnt have a comparable in Edmonton because Giordano excelled against such a high level of competition. - What is the next big thing in analytics? Maybe its zone entries or shot quality, or it could be something completely different. With so many smart people looking at the game from different angles, the options are nearly endless. ADJUSTING FOR RINK EFFECTS IN THE NHL Michael Schuckers, Stat Sports Consulting Whats it about? Since that vast majority of modern statistics come from NHL play-by-play files, the accuracy of those files is important. Takeaways: - Generally, the NHL data is pretty good, but certainly flawed. Rink scorer bias is pervasive because methods of tracking are suspect and its a difficult process in real time. - From 2007-2008 through 2012-2013, there were four rinks with big issues: Los Angeles, Florida, New Jersey and Toronto. - Calgary has been under-counting hits; Los Angeles typically overcounts (to the benefit of Dustin Brown). Toronto overcounts unblocked shot attempts, while New Jersey typically undercounts unblocked shot attempts. - Schuckers calculations, done in concert with Brian Macdonald (who has since been hired by the Florida Panthers) can level the playing field so that the bias of home scorers doesnt undermine the data. Although Spain could still advance out of the group stage, the game may have signalled the end of the run by a generation of Spanish stars whose quick passing, "tiki-taka" style delighted the world and helped them win the last three major tournaments. Kevin Faulk Jersey . Kelli Stack and Alex Carpenter also scored for the Americans, who avoided a repeat of Finlands upset at the Four Nations Cup in Lake Placid, N.Y., in November. Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Fiorentina levelled on aggregate in the 14th minute when Joaquin Sanchez Rodriguez headed back a long ball from David Pizarro and Pasqual smashed home an angled volley.NYON, Switzerland -- UEFA banned a Belgium player for 10 matches on Tuesday for making the "quenelle" gesture at a futsal European Championship match. Omar Rahou made the discriminatory gesture several times while celebrating scoring a goal against Romania at Antwerp in January, UEFA said. The sanction was double the five-match ban Nicolas Anelka received from an English Football Association independent tribunal last week for the same act. The FA is considering appealing to seek a tougher sanction against Anelka, who performed the quenelle after scoring for West Bromwich Albion in a Premier League match in December. The quenelle has been described as an "inverted Nazi salute." It involves pointing one straightened arm downward while touching the shoulder with the opposite hand. NKeal Harry Jersey. UEFA said the 21-year-old Rahou can appeal the sanction. UEFA requires a minimum 10-match sanction for racist abuse at matches it organizes after toughening its disciplinary rules last May. The following week, FIFA updated its sanctioning powers and called for minimum five-match suspensions. In the Rahou case, UEFA said one of its disciplinary inspectors "concluded that the gesture has discriminatory connotations." It was popularized by French comedian Dieudonne MBala MBala, who has been convicted multiple times for inciting racial hatred or anti-Semitism. Anelka said his gesture showed support for "anti-system" views and was not discriminatory.   SOCHI, Russia – In light of another devastating loss to injury, Swedish defender Erik

SOCHI, Russia – In light of another devastating loss to injury, Swedish defender Erik Karlsson need only recall what occurred in Ottawa last season when it seemed a rash of injuries would derail his Senators season. Brad Nortman Jersey . Only it didnt. Despite losing Karlsson, their no.1 defenceman, Jason Spezza, their no. 1 centre and Craig Anderson, their no. 1 goalie, Ottawa scraped and scratched toward a remarkable season in 2012-13, finishing as an unlikely seventh seed in the Eastern Conference before upsetting the Montreal Canadiens in the first round. And so now despite losing captain Henrik Zetterberg for the remainder of the Olympics with first-rate centre Henrik Sedin and rugged winger Johan Franzen already on the shelf, Sweden is prepared to defiantly march on. Backed by a 26-save shutout from Henrik Lundqvist and a late third period goal from Daniel Alfredsson, they did just that on Friday, edging the Swiss at Bolshoy Ice Dome in a hotly-contested preliminary round battle. "It doesnt really change anything in our mindset," said Karlsson of the Zetterberg absence, following the 1-0 victory against a feisty Switzerland squad. "Weve just got to focus on what we have and we have a pretty good group of guys without those guys as well so we should be able to play some good hockey, even though we miss them a lot." "Every team goes through injuries," added Alex Steen brashly, starting the tournament alongside Zetterberg and Gabriel Landeskog. "Its the same in the NHL as it is in the Elite League as it is in the Olympics, part of the job. Its [the media who] make it a bigger deal." Even without Zetterberg, Sedin and Franzen, the Swedes still boast a fair share of slick skill and talent with Patrik Berglund now alongside Steen and Landeskog and Nicklas Backstrom firing between Daniel Sedin and Loui Eriksson. And with continued excellence from Lundqvist between the pipes and an easy-moving, oft-explosive defence fronted by Karlsson and Oliver Ekman-Larsson, their shot at reclaiming gold for the first time since 2006 remains intact – if not slightly more difficult. "I could just feel my energy went down when I heard the news," said Lundqvist of Zetterberg, who is suffering from a herniated disc. "But at the same time, you have to regroup." The 17-year-old had four goals and four assists in 38 games for Liberec in the Czech pro league this past season. Zacha had three goals and two assists in seven games at the world mens under-18 championship in April when the Czech Republic took the silver medal. But Zachas agent, Allan Walsh, said on Twitter that Zacha is under contract to a professional team in his home country and is not interested to playing in the OHL. "Sarnia just wasted the #1 overall pick in the CHL Import Draft on a player whos not coming and has a professional contract. #RookieGM," Walsh posted on Twitter. Zacha, a six-foot-two, 200-pound forward, is eligible for the 2015 NHL entry draft. The Sherbrooke Phoenix selected Russian left-winger Vladislav Kamenev with the second pick and the Lethbridge Hurricanes drafted Russian winger Nikita Milekhin at No. DJ Chark Jersey. 3. Kamenev was taken in the second round of the NHL draft last week by the Nashville Predators. The 60 teams in the CHL, which includes the Western, Ontario and Quebec major junior mens hockey leagues, each get two selections in the import draft. Each team is eligible to dress two imports each season. But this years import draft marked the first time teams were not allowed to select goaltenders. “In partnership with Hockey Canada, the CHL has identified the need to further develop Canadian goaltenders by providing increased opportunities for them to compete in our league and succeed at the next level," CHL commissioner David Branch said in a statement when that decision was made. Import goaltenders drafted prior to this year are allowed to continue to play in the CHL until theyve exhausted their major junior eligibility.   LAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida – Its not for a lack of interest or due to a lack of effort
Geschrieben von: zhanjiao1212 - 23.05.2019, 03:26 - Forum: Brainstorming - Keine Antworten

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida – Its not for a lack of interest or due to a lack of effort - the Blue Jays are trying - but so far there is no trade to be made to enhance the club. Paul George Jersey . "I dont know that were close," said general manager Alex Anthopoulos. "I just think, right now, the acquisition cost just doesnt work for us right now. I dont know if I can quantify how far off or things like that that they might be but I would say we continue to have dialogue. So if you want to, look at that as encouraging." While young pitching prospects Aaron Sanchez and Marcus Stroman continue to be in high demand – Anthopoulos isnt opposed to moving either if the deal is right – its the Jays big bats that are attracting the most attention. "The one thing we have on this team is power," said Anthopoulos. "Theres not a lot of power out there on the market or the free agent prices dont work for some of the clubs so weve been approached by clubs asking for some of our position players that have power." Anthopoulos then moved quickly to deny a Toronto Sun report that Colby Rasmus had been offered to two teams in the search for starting pitching. "With respect to rumours and some of our position players, I would say just to kind of bury some of those. With all our players well be open-minded if people want to approach us but I can say as we sit here today I feel pretty confident that most, if not all, our position player core will be with the club to start the year," he said. The Blue Jays havent ruled out signing Rasmus to a long-term extension. The 26-year-old is coming off his best season since his breakout campaign in 2010 with the Cardinals. Limited by injury to 118 games, Rasmus authored a slash line of .276/.338/.501, and lifted his OPS to .840 from .689 the previous season. Anthopoulos is leaving the door open to a long-term extension with Rasmus, who will be a free agent for the first time after this season. In fact, only Jose Bautista of the Blue Jays starting outfielders is signed beyond 2014. Citing Edwin Encarnacion as a player given a long-term commitment in the middle of a breakout campaign, Anthopoulos said hes willing to wait on Rasmus in order to "gather more information," even if the centerfielder continues to perform at a high level and a deal becomes more costly. "We feel time is on our side in the sense of we dont feel the need to necessarily have to do it so early," said general manager Alex Anthopoulos. "Weve got more resources from a payroll standpoint." Jose Bautistas and Edwin Encarnacions team-friendly contracts – Bautista has two years left at $28 million with a club option for 2016 at $14 million while Encarnacion is signed for two more years at $19 million with a club option for 2016 at $10 million – make Rasmus a logical choice to be moved out of the group of power bats. Given this years offseason market for outfielders – Jacoby Ellsbury signed for $153 million over seven years with the Yankees and Shin-Soo Choo is expected to receive a similar figure in free agency – Anthopoulos has a difficult decision to make on Rasmus value. WEBER HEADS TO KOREA The Blue Jays will enter Thursday mornings Rule 5 draft with 39 players on their 40-man roster. Right-hander Thad Weber has been sold to NC Dinos of the Korean Baseball Organization. MOTTOLA NEARING DEAL WITH RAYS Former Blue Jays hitting coach Chad Mottola and the Tampa Bay Rays are finalizing the paperwork on his contract to become the clubs new minor league hitting coordinator. Mottola served in the same capacity for the Blue Jays in 2009 before spending three seasons as the hitting coach at Triple-A Las Vegas. Mottola and Dwayne Murphy, who retired, are the two members of last seasons coaching staff that wont be returning to Toronto. Kevin Seitzer, who was the hitting coach in Kansas City when manager John Gibbons served as Royals bench coach, was hired last month to replace Mottola. Tyreke Evans Jersey . On Wednesday night, they showed that stellar defence and a little small ball can get the job done too. With pinch-runner Kevin Pillar aboard after Dioner Navarro opened the bottom of the ninth with a single, Anthony Gose dropped down an excellent bunt along the first-base line. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Boston shortstop Stephen Drew will begin a stretch of what could be around 10 games in the minor leagues at Single-A Greenville. The Red Sox optioned the recently signed infielder to the minor club Friday. Drew agreed to re-sign with Boston Tuesday, six months after he had rejected a qualifying offer from the World Series champions to become a free agent. Boston manager John Farrell before Friday nights game at Tampa Bay said Drew would spent four days with Greenville beforre joining either Double-A Portland or Triple-A Pawtucket. Joe Young Jersey. The plan is for Drew to get around 25 at-bats overall. Drew, who spent one season in Boston, turned down a $14.1 million offer from the Red Sox last year after helping the team capture their third title in 10 years. His deal has a pro-rated $14 million salary. Drew batted .253 with 13 home runs and 67 RBIs in 124 games with Boston last season. Also, the Red Sox recalled right-hander Alex Wilson from Pawtucket.   LONDON -- Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insisted Sunday hell be back for another seas

LONDON -- Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insisted Sunday hell be back for another season at the club, ending speculation that he might leave after nearly 18 years at the helm. Alex Tuch Jersey . Wenger has yet to sign a new contract, with his current deal expiring after this campaign, and was asked after a 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Sunday whether hell be back next season. "Yes," he replied. "I dont know (when I will sign a new deal). I told you many times that my word is my word. I am from a period where you didnt need a pen to commit." He suggested that one factor that had been holding him back was waiting to see if the club would secure a top-four finish this season, which it did after Everton lost to Manchester City on Saturday. "It was of course important to be in the Champions League, that is for sure," he said. Under Wengers leadership, Arsenal has secured Champions League football for 17 consecutive seasons and overseen a lucrative move from Highbury to Emirates Stadium. When he joined Arsenal in 1996, the club flourished on the pitch, winning three league titles and four FA Cup trophies. But the 64-year-old Wenger has come under criticism from some fans in recent years for a lack of spending in the transfer market and failing to end Arsenals trophy drought. The team can win its first major title since 2005 in the FA Cup final against Hull on May 17. Jonathan Marchessault Jersey . He had spent 16 days on the disabled list before being activated Thursday.   LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Clippers President Andy Roeser is taking an indefinite lea

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Clippers President Andy Roeser is taking an indefinite leave of absence while the NBA restructures the franchise in the wake of owner Donald Sterlings lifetime ban. Cassio Brazil Jersey . Roesers immediate departure was announced Tuesday by the NBA. The league announced plans last week to appoint a CEO to oversee the franchise in Sterlings absence. "This will provide an opportunity for a new CEO to begin on a clean slate and for the team to stabilize under difficult circumstances," NBA spokesman Mike Bass said. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Sterling for life, fined him $2.5 million and urged owners to force him to sell the Clippers a week ago, responding to league-wide outrage over racist comments made by the 80-year-old real-estate mogul. Sterling is the NBAs longest-tenured owner after buying the Clippers in 1981. Roeser, one of the Clippers alternate governors, is one of the leagues longest-tenured executives, having just completed his 30th season with the team. Roeser has been a loyal frontman for Sterling since the franchises days in San Diego, and he stood by Sterling during every controversial stretch of the owners career. Only radio and television play-by-play announcer Ralph Lawler has worked for the Clippers longer than the 54-year-old Roeser, who became team president in 2007. But Roeser infuriated many longtime Clippers employees last week after Sterlings private conversation was made public by TMZ. While nearly everyone else was reacting with outrage, Roeser released a statement questioning whether the recordings of Sterling were legitimate, while simultaneously apologizing on Sterlings behalf for sentiments about Magic Johnson on the recordings. Roesers statement was sympathetic to Sterling and criticized V. Stiviano, Sterlings longtime associate and the other voice on the recordings. Clippers coach Doc Rivers said Roesers statement upset many loyal Clippers employees who had been horrified by Sterlings comments. Rivers held meetings with much of the Clippers front-office staff last week while Sterling was ousted, encouraging them to keep working for the franchise. Roeser joined the organization in 1984 from an accounting firm. Two years later, he became executive vice-president, overseeing all facets of the teams business operations. He has been president of the Los Angeles Clippers Foundation since it began in 1994. He helped bring Rivers to Los Angeles from the Boston Celtics last June, and was part of the acquisition of All-Star guard Chris Paul in 2011. Roeser also oversaw the development and construction of the teams training facility that opened in 2008. Rivers is the Clippers senior vice-president of basketball operations, working alongside executive vice-president of player personnel Gary Sacks on the basketball side of the teams operations. The Clippers overcame the distraction of Sterlings banishment to outlast Golden State in a seven-game first-round series on Saturday night. After just one day off, they returned to the court and trounced Oklahoma City 122-105 on the road Monday night in the opener of their Western Conference semifinal series. Alisson Jersey . Patric Hornqvist had two goals and one assist to help the Nashville Predators put a major dent into San Joses hopes for a division title by beating the Sharks 3-0 on Saturday night. "Its a missed opportunity," defenceman Dan Boyle said. "Nashville went into their building and did their job. Unfortunately, we didnt do ours to take advantage of that." Backup Carter Hutton made 35 saves in his first career shutout and Roman Josi also scored as the Predators kept their slim playoff hopes alive by beating winning road games on back-to-back nights against Anaheim and San Jose — the top two teams in the Pacific Division. Nashville is six points behind Dallas for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with four games remaining. "Were never going to give up," Hornqvist said. "Its a long road to make the playoffs. But as long as we have a chance, were going to work as hard as we can. Obviously beating two great teams is nice. I think both of them can win the Cup. Its a good statement for our team." The Predators win in Anaheim on Friday kept the Sharks just a point behind the Ducks in the standings but San Jose couldnt capitalize two nights after an emotional home win over Los Angeles. Now the Sharks are running out of time to catch the Ducks after falling flat again against a team likely to miss the post-season. They have only three games remaining, including their next contest in Anaheim on Wednesday, but the Ducks still have five games remaining and the inside track on the division title. San Jose is assured of at least second place. "After the game we put together against L.A. to give a showing like that is unacceptable," defenceman Jason Demers said. "We didnt come out to work. We just sat back on our heels and let them take the game to us. Its disappointing and something were going to have to obviously rectify as quick as possible here. Willian Jersey. " If the Sharks do end up falling short in the division it will be their play at home against some of the leagues also-rans that will be a big reason. San Jose has lost five home games since the Olympic break, all to teams that are currently out of playoff position. "Were in a race and we have to be better than that," captain Joe Thornton said. The Predators took control of the game in a dominant second period, killing off a pair of penalties and beating Antti Niemi three times. Hornqvist struck early in the period when he whacked at a rebound of Matt Cullens shot and knocked it in to extend his goal-scoring streak to four games. He added his eighth goal in the past 11 games midway through the period just after Nick Spaling came out of the penalty box. Spaling got the puck behind San Joses net and set up Hornqvist for a one-timer from the slot for his 20th goal of the season. Hornqvist then got an assist a few minutes later when Josi beat a flat-footed Demers as he drove to the net to make it 3-0. "We were emotionally not attached to the game in the second period," coach Todd McLellan said. "Were at Game 79 and the details and the system play, you should be able to do it in your sleep at this point. We didnt do that." The Sharks pressured in the third with 19 shots and two others from Brent Burns and Matt Irwin that hit posts but couldnt beat Hutton. The Predators have put together an impressive late-season run with points in seven of their past eight games. But it likely wont be enough to overcome a 1-4 homestand after the Olympic break that put Nashville in a deep hole. "This team wont quit," coach Barry Trotz said. "It hasnt quit all year. Its not going to quit. They will play right until the end. We see when the smoke clears where we stand." NOTES: Nashville swept the three-game season series and has won nine of 14 against the Sharks. ... Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of catcher Jordan Guida and right-handed pitcher Christian Garcia to contracts for the 2014 season. Dennis Byrd Jersey . Guida, 25, saw limited action in 42 games with the Goldeyes last season. He hit .184 in 38 at-bats and registered an RBI. He didnt register enough at-bats to accumulate a year of service, so he remains a first-year rookie in the American Association. “Hes a really good rookie,” Forney said. “Unfortunately the way our roster evolved last year, we didnt get him nearly enough playing time as I would have liked.  He has the ability to be a really good catcher. He has good hands, a really strong throwing arm, good feet behind the plate and really does a good job of calling games. Offensively, I think he has a lot of pop and some extra-base hit potential. We look forward to see him in camp again this year.” Guida was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Detroit Tigers in 2012 and played the second half of that season in their system. Garcia, 22, played most of last season in the Houston Astros organization at the Rookie level with Greeneville of the Appalachian League. He went 2-1 with a 5.85 ERA in 16 appearances with Greeneville and had two scoreless appearances with Class A Short Season Tri-City of the New York/Penn League. “He came highly recommended from an agent,” Forney said. “He has a powerful arm, anywhere from 91-94 MPH. Were looking for some younger guys to help fill out our pitching staff. Were hopeful he can come in and solidify a spot on the team. He can start and relieve. Well get a good look at him in training camp and determine where he fits best on our roster.” A 29th round selection by the Astros in the 2012 MLB amateur draft, Garcia played the last two seasons in their system at the Rookie and Class A Short Season levels. Winnipeg has also released pitchers Mark Hardy and Patrick Keating, who have retired from professional baseball. The Goldeyes now have 20 players signed for the 2014 season, including nine pitchers and 11 position players. LaDainian Tomlinson Jersey . Winnipeg trailed by five points in the final minute when quarterback Drew Willy completed a 13-play, 75-yard drive with Feoli-Gudinos 18-yard touchdown catch on third down to lift the Bombers to a 34-33 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Friday night. Joe Namath Jersey . Louis Blues have returned to the top spot in the TSN. http://www.authenticnyjetspro.com/Wesley...ts-jersey/ . Wawrinka, who is seeded fourth, is in the top half of the draw with Serbian Novak Djokovic. The Swiss star outlasted Djokovic in a five-set quarterfinal thriller last year and stunned Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the final to capture his first-ever Grand Slam title.Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Marlins have reportedly reached a one-year agreement with outfielder Ichiro Suzuki. The Miami Herald, citing a source with direct knowledge of the deal, is reporting the agreement is in the $2 million range. Suzuki hit .284 with one homer, 22 RBI and 42 runs scored in 143 games with the Yankees last season, his 14th year in a lleague. Wayne Chrebet Jersey. A 10-time All-Star, Suzuki has 2,844 major league hits and 4,122 professional hits when counting his time in Japan. He had 10 straight 200-plus hit seasons starting in his rookie year of 2001 with the Seattle Mariners, leading the league in the category seven times. With Miami, he will likely serve as a fourth outfielder and pinch-hitter. MONTREAL - No one needs to tell Troy Smith or Kevin Glenn they have to step up their games following disappointing Week 1 losses in which both quarterbacks struggled as the Alouettes welcome the Lions to Montreal for their home opener. Justin Reid Texans Jersey .The Heisman Trophy-winner replacing future Hall of Famer Anthony Calvillo at quarterback completed fewer than half his passes as the Montreal Alouettes offence fired blanks in its CFL season opener last week in Calgary.Smith hopes to start clicking with his receivers and moving the ball when the Alouettes (0-1) take on the B.C. Lions (0-1) in a bounce-back game for both teams at Percival Molson Stadium on Friday night. It falls on my shoulders as a quarterback, said Smith, who put up only 154 passing yards in a 29-8 loss to the Stampeders. I have to do a better job of decision-making and distributing the ball.We have weapons all over the field, but if we dont protect and get the ball out on time, these weapons mean nothing. So its on me.The Lions 35-year-old pivot Kevin Glenn may be thinking the same. His team took an early 14-0 lead but he then threw four interceptions in a 27-20 loss to the Edmonton Eskimos. It was only the third time the Lions lost at home since 2011.And this week the Lions go into the game with the virtually unknown Ryan Cave playing the key position on the offensive line, left tackle. Cave was rushed in this week after Andre Ramsey fractured an ankle, Cave had only two practices with his new team. The upside is that Cave spent most of training camp with the Alouettes and knows the players he will be trying to block.Everyone knows theres a new guy on the offensive line whos had two days of practice, but hes a very intelligent guy, very football smart, said Glenn. Hes picked up the scheme and blocking assignments very quickly.Well see what happens in a game but I have confidence hell do well. The Alouettes got a break on Thursday when CFL disciplinarians elected to give linebacker Kyries Hebert a fine rather than a suspension for his clothesline tackle on Calgarys Jon Cornish. So the stage is set for yet another in a long history of close battles between the Alouettes and Lions in Montreal. Last season, a last-play Sean Whyte field goal gave Montreal a 39-38 win.B.C. coach Mike Benevides played film of that game to his players as a reminder. What happened last year was BS, said Benevides. We had multiple turnovers and didnt score off it.We became unglued somewhat and, at the end of the game, theres a quarterback that hadnt played a lot (Tanner Marsh) who finds a way to get into field goal range and beat you. You cant let that happen.Smith was tabbed as the Alouettes starter going into their first season since 2000 without CFL al-time passing leader Calvillo behind centre. He had an impressive array of receivers led by S.J. Green, but wasnt able to find them consistently, often overthrowing them. The teams lone touchdown by running back Steven Lumbala came on the final play of the game after pair of Calgary roughing calls put the ball on the one.More reps, more practice, was Smiths answer to what he needs to find his groove. As a quarterback, I think staring down the eye of adversity and understanding that only you can surface yourself out should be fun.Anybody who is worth their weight in marbles would not want to dig themselves into a situation like this, but would love to dig themselves out.How long first-year coach Tom Higgins will stick with Smith if the offence doesnt click remains to be seen. Marsh is the backup, and third stringer Alex Brink has CFL experience. When asked about it, Higgins didnt rule it out. But he expects that Smith only needs time and experience with CFL football to succeed.I dont know if were going to a two-quarterback system, he said. Im hoping thats not the case. But Troy has been under pressure before. Its about production. Its about us giving him an opportunity to be successful. I think we have the ability to run the football. We need to do that. We need to get the ball out of Troys hand quicker in certain situations, but also give him an opportunity to air the ball out.The Alouettes will be without key receiver Duran Carter, as well as safety Mike Edem, with ankle injuries. The Lions have started the season without No. 1 quarterback Travis Lulay, who is on the six-game injured list with a shoulder injury. The 35-year-old Glenn completed 18 of 28 passes for 251 yards against the Eskimos, including 102 yards to Andrew Harris.Cutting down on turnovers will be the top priority, although that will be a challenge against a ball-hungry Montreal defence.Theyre an attack defence, said Glenn. They come after you. They want to disrupt the offence and cause turnovers, and thats one thing we learned last week, that we cant turn the ball over and win.Former Lions defensive end Chris Wilson will likely line up across from Cave, but linebackers like Hebert and Chip Cox will no doubt also test the newcomer as he tries to play one of the most difficult positions on the field with little practice time.Benevides is confident the six-foot-five 345-pound Cave wont be trampled. With the challenge a very good Montreal defence presents, at least his advantage is that hes seen those men and what they can do, said Benevides. Yeah, its not an ideal world to have a professional player playing after two days with the program, but thats the challenge we have to face.Hes done a good job. Hes a smart player, a big player. In three days of knowing him, I like him a lot.Note to readers: CORRECTS Smiths passing yards to 154 sted 148 in fourth graf. Keke Coutee Texans Jersey . Team officials did not indicate the extent of the injury Saturday, simply listing Rose with "left knee soreness." Rose has played two preseason games without any sign of problems. The first NBA game in South America now will be missing its biggest star. Tyrann Mathieu Texans Jersey . Founding members of the Genie Army, a group of Eugenie Bouchard supporters who cheered for the rising tennis star during the Australian Open in January, will be in the city for the Rogers Cup, beginning this weekend. http://www.nfltexansproauthentic.com/Bla...in-Jersey/ . -- J.R. Sweezy was the one part of the Seattle Seahawks offensive line that had avoided injuries or having to change positions this season.A look at the six head coaching vacancies around the league and the leading candidates, runners up, and other notes for each opening. Atlanta Falcons First Choice: Todd Bowles, Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Bowles has been a hot candidate in this year’s coaching search with it being reported every team with a vacancy called the Cardinals to ask permission to interview him. It also appears both Bowles and Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians believe he’ll get a job with Bowles turning down an interview request from the Oakland Raiders and Arians already reportedly looking for a replacement. Bowles is one of two candidates the Falcons are reportedly bringing in for a second interview. Backup Plan: Teryl Austin, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Austin lacks Bowles’ experience as a coordinator but led a quietly impressive Lions defence this season. While Austin has also interviewed with the Chicago Bears, he may need some more seasoning before serious head coaching consideration. Notes: According to reports, Bowles and Austin are the only two candidates the Falcons are bringing in for second interviews but the team has also talked to Seattle Seahawks DC Dan Quinn, Denver Broncos OC Adam Gase, former Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone, and New England Patriots OC Josh McDaniels. McDaniels was at one point considered the favourite given his ties to Falcons to GM Thomas Dimitroff and assistant GM Scott Pioli, but according to SIs Peter King, he was no longer a candidate after his interview. Chicago Bears First Choice: John Fox, former Denver Broncos head coach It was hard to gauge the Bears’ coaching search until Fox was unexpectedly let go by the Broncos after their loss in the Divisional Round. The veteran head coach is a solid candidate and makes sense for the Bears’ veteran roster. Chicago wasted little time in setting up an interview with Fox but ESPN reports cautioned it’s not yet a done deal. Backup Plan: Dan Quinn, Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator The Bears were reportedly impressed with Quinn as well as Cardinals DC Todd Bowles, and Broncos OC Adam Gase. I’ll give Quinn the edge because if new GM Ryan Pace was that in to Austin or Bowles, he could have hired one of them already, and the Bears focused their attention first on Fox rather than Gase when both became available. Denver Broncos First Choice: Gary Kubiak, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Kubiak has declined other interview requests, opting instead to stay with the Ravens, but a return to Denver to coach Peyton Manning may be too good to pass up. Kubiak both played and coached for the Broncos. He was offensive coordinator under Mike Shanahan before leaving to become head coach of the Houston Texans. The Broncos requested permission to interview Kubiak less than 24 hours after parting ways with Fox. Backup Plan: Mike Shanahan, former Washington Redskins head coach This one isn’t as farfetched as you might think. The regime that fired Shanahan is no longer in charge in Denver and Peyton Manning reportedly admires the veteran coach. With Adam Gase far from locked in at offensive coordinator, Shanahan could also bring his son Kyle in to run the offence. Notes: There isn’t much news on other Broncos candidates only a day after the team parted with Fox but it appears John Elway will hire out of house, opting against promoting either Gase or defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, who could each land head coaching jobs elsewhere. New York Jets First Choice: Dan Quinn, Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Quinn has reportedly been one of the most impressive interviews this off--season. Custom Texans Jerseys. The only thing that could get in the way of a Quinn-Jets marriage is impatience. The Jets may not want to potentially wait three weeks for the Seahawks’ season to end, opting to go with Plan B instead to give him time to find solid coordinators. Backup Plan: Todd Bowles, Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator The Jets are reportedly bringing Bowles in for a second interview this week, which lends credit to the notion the team doesn’t want to wait for Quinn. If Bowles impresses, the Jets could offer him a contract rather than run the risk of losing both him and Quinn in the end. Notes: Former Bills head coach Doug Marrone appeared to be the heavy frontrunner for the Jets job when he opted out of his contract in Buffalo before bombing his interview. It seemed like poetic justice until you remember Marrone is making $4 million from the Bills this year for nothing. The Jets added Carolina Panthers DC Sean McDermott to their coaching search early this week. Oakland Raiders First Choice: Jack Del Rio, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Del Rio leapfrogged Tony Sparano as frontrunner for the job sometime last week when it became obvious the Raiders were waiting for someone, otherwise they would have just offered Sparano the job already. Those suspicions were confirmed when the Raiders set up a second interview with Del Rio not long after the Broncos were eliminated from the playoffs. Backup Plan: Tony Sparano, Oakland Raiders interim head coach Sparano was a legitimate candidate to stay on as head coach of the Raiders but unless something goes wrong during Del Rio’s interview on Tuesday, Sparano will likely finish as runner-up. Notes: Oakland’s first choice was of course Jim Harbaugh but lost out on the former San Francisco 49ers head coach to the University of Michigan early in the process. The most interesting interview conducted by Raiders owner Mark Davis was Mike Shanahan, the one-time Raiders coach who publicly feuded with Mark’s dad Al. San Francisco 49ers First Choice: Adam Gase, Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Minutes after the Broncos parted ways with Fox, the 49ers were looking to set up a second interview with Gase, fearing the offensive coordinator was in line for a promotion in Denver. San Fran can take their gas off the pedal a little as it appears Denver has no interest in promoting Gase – or even keeping him on as offensive coordinator – but the 49ers clearly tipped their hand in all the chaos. Backup Plan: Jim Tomsula, San Francisco 49ers defensive line coach Reports state Tomsula, who at one point appeared to be the favourite to succeed Harbaugh while the now Michigan head coach was still with the team, is still the in-house favourite, despite not even having a formal interview with team brass. Maybe the 49ers already know everything they need to know about Tomsula, perhaps including that he’s more a runner-up type candidate for head coaching positions. Notes: Despite a strong interview, 49ers DC Vic Fangio doesn’t appear to be one of the team’s top choices as head coach. And if that’s the case, San Francisco will reportedly run the risk of losing the solid defensive leader entirely. Dallas Cowboys First Choice: Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys head coach While it doesn’t seem like it, the Cowboys technically have an opening at head coach with Garrett’s contract expiring once Dallas was eliminated from the playoffs. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has publicly stated he wants Garrett back and the lack of interest in the solid head coach from around the league lends to the idea that Garrett isn’t going anywhere.
